EDF’s HP turbine experienced erosion problems in its first stage and Renuda was asked to use CFD to find a solution which would reduce blade erosion. In collaboration with EDF, Renuda set up the CFD model, compared levels of blade erosion using different geometric and operating conditions and found a suitable solution. The results enabled EDF to reassess the cleaning processes in its combined-cycle power stations, reducing risk of delayed delivery of an operational plant and so avoiding a significant cost overrun.
