As part of BP’s forward planning in the search for oil from the sea bed, they foresaw a problem with wax rising from oil and depositing in riser pipe bends. CFD was the best tool to investigate this complex challenge.
Renuda was commissioned to look into the scale and frequency of the deposits, which might clog up the pipes and interfere with the smooth running of the oil well. Using BP’s input data, Renuda conducted simulations with different particle sizes and flow rates and modelled the multiphase flow.
The information provided by these CFD calculations was integrated into BP’s wax management strategy, and gave BP the assurance they could effectively manage the deposition scenario.
