Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is heavily used in the rail industry to investigate many aspects of train and station design and performance.
In France, Germany and Spain, the state controlled railway companies such as the SNCF, Deutsche Bahn and RENFE use CFD in their research programs and for problem solving whilst the privately owned train manufacturers such as Alstom and Bombardier have invested in CFD for use in their design processes.
As with other industries, the use of numerical simulation tools has aided all of these companies to gain a better understanding of the operating performance of their products, improve safety and passenger comfort whilst helping to reduce design cycle times and costs.
