Major car manufacturers like General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Renault or PSA Peugeot Citroën have done many investments in CFD methodologies for their design purposes. But these companies have also made (and still make) a strong contribution to research and development in CFD.
CFD is used for improving passenger comfort and safety, reducing fuel consumption and exploring new technologies. Fields of ongoing research topics are mainly external aerodynamics and combustion in Diesel and gasoline engines.
